Health benefits of raw food

Our pets might be curled up on the couch now, but their ancestors weren’t! Long before squeaky toys and treat jars, their ancestors thrived on fresh, raw food, which is exactly what our dogs still need to thrive today. A raw diet taps into those natural instincts, supports energy, digestion, and overall health. It’s not just a trend. It’s what their bodies were built for.

When you think about what you eat most days, it’s a balanced, healthy and diverse diet covering the food groups and nutrition you need (except for those days you accidentally finish an entire bag of chips). Well, your pet needs the same thing, which cannot be achieved through most commercial pet diets and products currently on the market. A natural and less processed raw food diet is going to cover all your basis for overall pet health, nourishment and sustenance.

Now let’s talk specifics, there are A LOT of benefits and we’re going to explain how a raw diet helps achieve them. But here’s the basics:

  • Improves digestion/digestive function
  • Less odorous & smaller stools
  • Reduces body & breath odour
  • Improved skin and coat condition
  • Bone & joint support/orthopaedic soundness
  • Great for teeth & gums
  • Increased resilience to allergies & parasites
  • Assists in behaviour & in keeping dog’s calmer

Improves digestion

Improves digestion

Your pup’s digestive system is super smart and works to extract, absorb, and utilise as many good nutrients from their food as possible. This is why highly digestible ingredients are so important and are used in a raw diet. With no filler ingredients and fewer carbohydrates, your pet can digest raw food faster (1).

Less odourous and smaller stools

Less odourous and smaller stools

Improved digestion leads to less stool as more nutrients have been absorbed. Other pet food is typically packed with filler ingredients and carbohydrates such as potato, corn, rice and soy, which are harder for a dog’s digestive system to break down and use, causing their stools to be larger and heavier in odour. You may be lucky enough to also notice less gas due to easier and faster digestion and more efficient absorption (1).

Reduces body and breath odour

Reduces body and breath odour

You’re going to have to trust us on this one! Our customers and the raw-feeding community have noticed their pups smell better on a raw diet! This is attributed to reduced carbohydrates and high-quality protein, reducing oil production and making your pup smell better (2).

As for their breath, chewing raw meat and bones works as a natural toothbrush to remove the build-up of plaque and tartar which is what creates odour-causing bacteria on their teeth (4).

Improved skin and coat condition

Improved skin and coat condition

Raw dog food is packed with naturally occurring omega-3 fatty acids, which supports healthy skin and soft coat by providing oils the skin needs to moisturise itself. Healthy omega fats also help those pups with allergies or skin diseases by providing anti-inflammatory benefits, reducing hair loss and moisturising dry and itchy skin (3).

Bone and joint support/orthopaedic soundness

Bone and joint support

Dogs and bones go together like Bunnings and a Snag, and there’s a great reason why! Raw feeding, specifically the meat and bone you’re feeding, will assist in growth and development, heart health, and supporting healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. The phosphorus, glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and marrow will also give your pup more energy to exercise, stretch and use their muscles (5).

As a natural source of high-quality and absorbable calcium, crushed bone is an essential vitamin and nutrient for your pet. Calcium benefits your pet’s bone and teeth strength; it is both beneficial and necessary during development and for continued healthy growth, supporting your pet’s muscle function by assisting the heart in contracting and pumping blood around the body effectively.

Meat and offal contain phosphorus which balanced with calcium assists pets in normal, healthy growth and development. Bone Marrow in raw food is a great source of fat, iron, copper and more, which are all highly nutritious and beneficial to our pets (4).

Great for teeth and gums

Great for teeth and gums

Poor dental hygiene can, in some instances, be attributed to a poor diet, especially those that are heavily processed or high in carbohydrates. Sugars, starches, carbohydrates, filler and synthetic ingredients can all contribute to tooth decay and other oral diseases. High levels of these ingredients create a breeding ground for oral bacteria and unhealthy bacterial growth on the teeth and gums (4).

The ingredients used in a balanced raw diet work to keep your dog’s mouth and teeth clean and healthy. The enzymes occurring in meat, vegetables and bone all protect the teeth and gums. One of the biggest contributing factors to improved dental health and better-smelling breath is that raw food is less likely to stick to your pups’ teeth than a processed food with more synthetic fillers, sugars and starches; this will prevent tartar and plaque build-up.

As a natural source of high-quality and absorbable calcium, crushed bone is an essential vitamin and nutrient for your pet. Raw bones are often called ‘nature’s toothbrush’ as they work to assist in the removal of plaque from the teeth (5).

Increased resilience to allergies and parasites

Increased resilience to allergies and parasites

Well-rounded nutrition works to improve immune function in your pup, without the synthetic ingredients there is less stress on their immune function. The meat, vegetables and superfoods in a raw diet all contribute to achieving this which allows them to fight off parasites and keeps them allergy free. As previously mentioned, a raw diet will increase oil production and a healthy coat also deterring pests and making your pup less itchy and sensitive overall (3).

Assists in behaviour and in keeping dogs calmer

Assists in behaviour and in keeping dogs calmer

No one likes a stomach-ache and that includes our pups, just like us, when they eat something that disagrees with them it makes them uncomfortable and can put them in a bad mood.

Food is fuel! A well-fed pup is going to have the energy from their food to exercise and play, making them feel better. A raw diet being easier to digest will make your pet feel less sluggish and irritable making it easier for them to move around. Exercise elevates their serotonin levels, which balances their stress hormones, overall making a much calmer and happier pup!

We all want to see our pups happy, and they need a bit of help for that to happen. A raw food diet is packed full of vitamins and antioxidants which have amazing impacts on brain function, behaviour and mood. Highly processed diets usually contain synthetic additives that are linked to behavioural problems in dogs. The carbohydrates used in these foods are also a sub-group of sugar which causes rapid spikes and falls in dogs’ blood glucose and insulin levels impacting their behaviour, often making them a little prickly (7).

With all these health benefits in mind there is still one more reason most people chose to feed raw: because their dogs love it!
